Scarlet Mae

Scarlet Mae, alias Marije van Rijn, is a Dutch singer, pianist and songwriter. She started out as a classical pianist but always had a love and interest for pop, jazz, soul and folk music. Inventively mixing these styles she knows how to surprise you and move you. Her music has a light and lively feel. She easily switches from modest to exuberant, with a catchy chorus that sticks in the back of your mind all day.

She released her first full-length album in a sold-out Bird in Rotterdam and in Paradiso, Amsterdam. For weeks, it was the most listened to album on the 3VOOR12 Luisterpaal. It was covered with great reviews.  “Addictive, convincing, multi talented and extremely musical” are some of the superlatives that have been used to describe her music.

She was invited to play shows on Dutch national radio stations such as Radio 1, Radio 2, 3FM and Radio 6. The live circuit also reacted positively. She and her band played many shows, for example at North Sea Round Town, Hollands major free festival Appelpop, a sold out Paradiso Main Hall (supporting Jonny Lang) and the Eurosonic showcase Festival, that resulted in a tour in the UK in 2013. Highlight of the tour was her appearance on the international showcase Festival The Great Escape in Brighton.

To fund the recordings of her first full-length album, she started a successful crowd funding project, cooperating with  Radio 6 and involving the donors in the recording process. In the writing process she collaborated with pianist Daan Herweg (Caro Emerald) and guitarist Paul Willemsen (Ruben Hein, Beans and Fatback). Paul Willemsen produced the album.
